Chichester gas works update

The gas replacement project along South Street has been extended until May 26, SGN has said.

The company confirmed the delay was caused by having to stop mechanically digging around Chichester’s Market Cross ‘due to the potential vibration damage’.

Workers switched to digging by hand, which ‘slowed us considerably’.

In a leaflet sent out to residents and businesses, SGN said: “We have completed this phase of our project and temporarily restored the road surface in the northern end of South Street.

“Our engineers are now upgrading the service pipes to properties along South Street.

“Access to South Street for residents and deliveries continues via Southgate and vehicles are able to exit via West Street.

“We are aware that West Sussex County Council is planning to resurface the road just south of our work area in South Street.

“We have agreed to extend our project further along South Street and upgrade our network between Old Market Avenue and Southgate (A286) now.

“This means we will not have to return to South Street once the road has been resurfaced.”

When SGN’s final phase of work starts on May 2, northbound traffic will not be able to enter South Street via Southgate for around four weeks.

Traffic will have access to South Street via West Street, and will be able to travel in both directions between Tower Street and Chapel Street.

Buses will continued to be diverted for the remainder of the project.

As reported, some South Street shop owners have complained about a loss of trade since the works began on January 18.

“We apologise for any inconvenience the extension to our project may cause and we’ll be doing everything we can to complete this work as quickly as possible,” SGN said.

The county council has delayed plans to replace and repair the brickwork at the top of South Street until the autumn.
