Chichester Liberal Democrat says election determined ‘by fear’

AS THE Liberal Democrats saw a number of high-profile politicians lose their seats, the Chichester candidate said he felt the election had been ‘determined by fear’.

Andrew Smith saw the Liberal Democrat support in Chichester drop from 27.4 per cent of the vote in 2010 to 8.5 per cent.

This was in line with the national trend which saw government ministers being ousted.

Mr Smith said: “I’m surprised that we’ve lost certain seats. People like Lynne Featherstone – an outstanding MP who actually is a government minister – we would have expected her to hold and obviously Vince Cable, Ed Davey, Simon Hughes. There’s a long list.

At the Chichester Cathedral hustings, Mr Smith spoke of the need for electoral reform for more representative politics and he reiterated the point today (May 7).

“It looks like UKIP are going to finish a clear third in terms of votes and they might just have one MP . I think there will be a clamour for proportional representation just in terms of giving some proportionality.

“What I think this election has been determined by is fear. I think proportional representation enables a positive choice by electors.”
