Chichester man arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother

Police in Chichester have arrested a man on suspicion of murder following the disappearance of his elderly mother.

The 78-year-old victim, who lived with her son at the Lakeside Caravan Park in Chichester, was reported missing by close friends who became concerned after not hearing from her for several days.

The man, 50, was arrested yesterday morning (Wednesday, March 23) and is currently in police custody awaiting interview.

A search began at midday yesterday in woodland between Goodwood and East Dean to try to locate the missing woman.

Police have cordoned off areas close to Pilleygreen Hill and eyewitnesses told the Observer they had seen search dogs on the scene to help officers find the missing woman.

Sussex Police has confirmed it is searching other addresses in relation to the arrested man.

Detective Chief Inspector of Sussex major crime branch Nick May said: “I’m treating this as a murder investigation.

“We have had certain information which as led us to believe the lady may be dead.”

Police are appealing for witness who saw anything suspicious at the scene between March 17 and 20 to contact them on 0845 60 70 999.
