Chichester Observer review: This Briton really has got talent - and is a credit to Chichester and his family

But former Chichester schoolboy Isaac Waddington made clear in his passionate rendition of the lyrics to his semi-final song on ITV on Thursday that he didn’t want anything but honesty.

‘Don’t patronise me’ was a key line in the song.

But he had no need to fear as a huge public vote swept him through to the finals of the show.

Isaac, despite his youth, is an amazing musical talent and a huge credit to Chichester’s The Prebendal School which he left in 2012.

Not surprisingly he was head chorister at The Prebendal, and won the BBC Young Chorister of the Year in 2012.

As comfortable playing the piano as vocalising the music, his overwhelming strength was the maturity that hallmarked the manner and style of his performance.

At a glance, he might have the looks of a boyband member, but his talent soars above the commonplace of such a grouping.

Thursday’s semi-final was one of the toughest to win. It attracted the highest number of public votes so far in the week - some two million - and the line-up was the best so far.

Any number of the contestants could have deserved a place in the final based on the show.

But Isaac triumphed with a performance that was as singularly understated as it was powerfully self-assured.

Too many contestants hope to win the audience over with a hard-luck story.

Not this prodigy.

Clearly he comes from a loving family whose pride in their son seems matched by the values they live by.

Let’s hope the people of Sussex get behind Isaac in the final. And all of our United Kingdom too.

This youngster encapsulates the very spirit of the popular ITV show: that Britain, and this Briton in particular, really does have talent.
