Sam Corbett, from Jessie Younghusband Primary School, was picked to shadow Chichester’s mayor, Cllr Peter Budge, after writing a letter explaining why he should be given the honorary title for the day.

Classmates William Shears and Lucy Campbell were also selected as young councillors to join Sam on last Thursday’s busy schedule.

“I was really happy when I was picked for junior mayor,” said 11-year-old Sam.

“So far we have looked around the prison and the fire station, I have really enjoyed it.”

“Learning about the prison cells has been interesting and we went through an assault course at the fire station which tests the firefighters fitness, which I won.”

He added: “I’ve enjoyed wearing the gowns – they’re a lot more comfortable and less heavy than I thought they would be.”

Mr Budge, said: “The day has been super, I have really enjoyed it.

“I think it is important that they understand that one day they will be in charge of something, and that could be in this city if that is what they wanted.

“It is a great opportunity to let them see what it is like to keep the city going.”
