Since January, major roadworks have been under way on the road off the A27 Fishbourne roundabout, with council officials saying the work would make it ‘quicker and easier’ to reach the Tesco Extra supermarket.

The scheme cost £280,000 to complete.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said yesterday: “All the traffic management has now been removed from site and the new road layout is bedding in well.

“We are pleased to say the levels of traffic disruption were far lower than was expected during the works.”

Prior to the start of the works, motorists were warned to expect ‘short-term pain for long-term gain’, by the then cabinet member for transport, Pieter Montyn.

Under the new system, motorists no longer have to give way to get on to Cathedral Way from Fishbourne Road East.

Instead, they join two lanes of traffic heading into Chichester off the A27.

Traffic coming off the A27 also now has a dedicated slip lane to get into Tesco just after the two lanes merge into one.
