Children at Noah’s Ark Nursery in Newhaven were thrilled to bits when they took delivery of their new chickens.
During the summer their pet chickens and guinea pigs were stolen from the nursery’s back garden leaving staff and children devastated.
But now thanks to cllr Peter Charlton, the pupils are the proud owners of three chickens again, which he bought from Middle Farm in Firle this week.
Cllr Charlton, who represents the Ouse Valley East on East Sussex County Council, said he offered to dip into his own pockets to buy the chickens for the children when he heard the news about the thefts.
Now that the nursery has a secure chicken run for the birds, it was time to deliver the chickens.
Together they picked out their new pets at Middle Farm on Wednesday October 8.
Nursery deputy supervisor Sophie Lucas said: “The children love the chickens.
“They really enjoyed naming them and feeding them.
“It was really kind of Peter. It just shows the community spirit and he was really thinking about the children.”
