Child, 6, goes missing from West Wittering beach

The Coastguard was scrambled to reports of a missing child on West Wittering beach this afternoon (Thursday, August 6).

The Selsey Coastguard was called out to the popular beauty spot at 1.14pm alongside crews from Hayling Lifeboat team.

Both were stood down shortly after when the missing child was found safe and well.

Posting on its Facebook page, the Coasguard issued a warning to day-trippers to keep an eye on their children at all times when visiting the beach.

Free child safe wristbands are available from the lifeguard tower on West Wittering beach.

A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you are local or not. Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you're in trouble. Please help us and our families stay safe.

"Be aware of the risks, keep your distance."
