Children among dozens of suspected migrants stranded in a dinghy off Eastbourne

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said the vessel, which has around 30 people on board, came into difficulty around 23 miles south of Beachy Head.

Eastbourne and Newhaven RNLI lifeboats have been deployed, as well as Bexhill, Eastbourne and Langdon Battery Coastguard rescue teams.

The spokesman said: “HM Coastguard is only concerned with preservation of life, rescuing those in trouble and bringing them safely back to shore, where they will be handed over to the relevant partner emergency services or authorities.”

The Herald understands the inflatable dinghy was discovered by the Seven Sisters ferry as it travelled along the Eastbourne coast.

Of the approximately 30 migrants, the Herald understands four are children. All have now been placed into the Eastbourne lifeboat.

The Newhaven lifeboat is towing the stricken boat back to Sovereign Harbour separately.

Border Force officers, HM Coastguard and Sussex Police are on the scene.
