Children dress up for World Book Day

On World Book Day itself, children at Summerlea School, in Windsor Drive, Rustington, came to school dressed as their favourite fictional characters from books before sharing their favourite reads with their classmates.

Teachers then performed Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate, a play with a message about litter picking and being resilient, to children at the school.

Later in the afternoon, the teachers all swapped classes and year groups and shared their favourite stories.

As part of their celebrations, the children were also visited by children’s author and illustrator Pauk Geraghty.

The Friends of Summerlea School team funded the visit of Paul, whose books include Solo, Tortuga’ and Hoppameleon.

Paul shared stories of his childhood growing up in South Africa and told the children about how this inspired his love of writing stories and drawing illustrations.

Gemma Camble, a year-two teacher at the school, said: “During the sessions, we were fortunate to be able to watch Paul in action as he drew a truly terrifying dinosaur and a loveable, cuddly penguin. He also read us one of his books as he drew, Dinosaur in Danger, and we were all enthralled by his inspiring storytelling skills!”

World Book Day took place earlier this month.
