The gathering, at a tree in a wooded area close to the Impulse Leisure Centre, was organised by Hayley Rogers as a thank you to the local community for rallying behind the tree.

It was on a family trip to Dublin that the idea for the Lancing fairy tree was born. Inspired when she saw the impact a tree decorated with small windows, a bell, glitter and more had on children their, Hayley decided to bring the magic back home and created a fairy tree for her daughter to enjoy.

Over the past six weeks children from across the area have visited the tree, writing letters to the fairies and unleashing there imagination.

Hayley, from Sompting, said: “For a while, all you could hear were the excited squeals of children as they followed the path and stumbled across the tree, knocking on the little wooden doors, peering through the windows, ringing the fairy bell and reading all of the beautiful letters and drawings left by the previous visitors to the fairies.”

Some 540 letters, drawings and crafts have been left at the tree since its creation at the end of July.

Hayley said she had been overwhelmed by the response.
