Youngsters gave the new equipment a thumbs-up after testing it out at a fun opening event today which included an Easter egg hunt.

The modern playground draws on the environment for inspiration and includes a swing with reclaimed tyres and a giant ‘forest’ climbing frame. It is suitable for children aged 14 and younger.

Councillor Andy Cooper, Chairman of Arun District Council, said: “I was delighted to be asked to officially open the new playground in Mewsbrook Park. It really is a fantastic facility and I could tell by the look on the faces of the children who attended today that it’s going to be extremely popular.”

Councillor Terence Chapman, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services at Arun District Council, who also attended the opening event, said: “This playground is a fantastic addition to the play facilities we have in Arun. Our play strategy focuses on ensuring the most popular play areas can be enjoyed for years to come, and there’s no doubt from what we’ve seen today that this one will be.”

The refurbishment has been funded by £50,000 from Arun District Council, along with a £25,000 grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust.

The grant was awarded after a successful bid from Arun’s Parks Team, with help from the Mewsbrook Park Community Support Group.

The Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Paul Taylor, said: “Playgrounds are a vital part of community life. They provide a space where children can meet up, have fun, make new friends, and exercise outdoors. It is great to hear that this new one is now open.”

The playground is not the only new attraction in the park. Rowing boats available for hire made a welcome return to the Mewsbrook Park Boating Lake during the Easter weekend.
