Chills at the tills as staff have to wrap up

STAFF at Sainsbury's store in Buckhurst Place have been wearing gloves and scarves to stack shelves and have donned thermals and thick socks to combat the cold as they man check-outs and counters.

For weeks the store’s workers and customers have endured freezing conditions, and last Wednesday a petition was launched to express concerns about the lack of heating within the shop.

Within 24 hours well over 100 customers had signed in support, and staff are hopeful that senior managers will address the issue as a matter of urgency.

One female assistant said: “I’ve got three layers on under my uniform and have borrowed my husband’s thermals, but I’m still chilled to the bone. It’s been like this for weeks now and everyone’s thoroughly fed up.”

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said: “ There was a problem with the heating in our Bexhill store and we asked customers who complained to let us have their contact details.

“The heating problem has now been fixed and the temperature in the store is at the correct levels.
