Chinese New Year for Sidley pupils

Chinese New Year celebrations at Sidley C.P school started with a special assembly involving children from all year groups and ending in a dragon dance.

The dragon was made in school and was almost the length of the school hall.

It was seen at the end of the school day parading around the playground handing out Good Fortune messages written by the children.

A range of different activities were run through out the day to mark Chinese New Year.

Parents were invited to a Chinese cooking demonstration and tasting session with Xi Jiangdi, local teacher of Mandarin.

Year 6 children took part in a workshop on Chinese culture organised by Marie Cooper, Assistant Principal and Vanessa Fran, teacher of Mandarin and a small group of Year 10 and 11 students from Bexhill High School.

Xi Jiangdi took a calligraphy and mask making session with the Year 5 children.

In addition, Scolarest cook, Lorna Delaine and her team provided a special Chinese menu for lunch, giving the children an opportunity to try out something new.

Head teacher Julie Reece said that she felt the occasion was "an excellent opportunity to raise the children's awareness of other cultures and get the whole community participating. "It was fantastic to welcome some of the parents and grandparents as well as it presents an event for a shared experience with their children and grandchildren."
