Choir welcomed back to Battle church

AMACHOEUR, the French choir from Picardy, have made a return to Battle following their well received performances last year.

Welcomed to the church of St Mary the Virgin by the Dean, Dr John Edmondson, these accomplished voices delighted a large audience with a varied programme of song, including Scottish and English folksongs, plantation spirituals and sacred works.

The choir performed under the enthusiastic direction of Pascale-Odile Roussel and the visit was arranged through the Battle Twinning Association whose French president, Guy Grognet, was one of the male voices.

The choir followed up their Saturday evening performance by taking part in one of St Mary’s services the next morning.

‘My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean’ is a particular favourite of the choir.

British hosts were able to enjoy an impromptu rendering of it in the Market Square car park as their French guests prepared to leave for the return journey to Picardy.

This is just one of a number of exchanges that the Battle Twinning Association foster each year.

Anyone interested in joining the association and taking part should contact the secretary, Suzanne Williams, on 01424 773039.
