Christian Aid Week in Rustington and East Preston

CHURCHES in Rustington and East Preston have joined forces to support this year’s Christian Aid Week.

They are united in a common vision of trying to change the world, to raise awareness of global poverty and to attempt to inspire others to work for change.

The programme for the week has been organised by the Rustington Churches Together group and St Mary’s Church, East Preston, which hosted an ecumenical service for Christian Aid yesterday (May 13), at 6.30pm.

The speaker at the service was the Rev Keith Williams, a volunteer with Christian Aid, who will give up-to-date news about the charity’s work.

During the week volunteers will be out and about in both villages, making door-to-door collections with the distinctive Christian Aid Week red envelopes, seeking donations for the world’s poor.

Anyone who is out when they call can take their donation to the Rustington Methodist Church office, or hand it to the street collectors on Friday (see below).

Collectors will be out in Rustington shopping centre on Friday (May 18), trying to beat their total for last year.

Also on Friday, a “Lunch to Alleviate Poverty”, with home-made soup, bread and cheese will be served at Rustington Methodist Church from noon-1pm, for a £2 minimum donation to Christian Aid. All are welcome.

Christian Aid Week is Britain’s longest-running fund-raising week and has been a firm fixture in the calendar of many thousands of people each year since 1957, having a massive impact on the fight to end poverty around the world.

This year the Government has pledged to match pound for pound money collected during Christian Aid Week, up to £5m.
