Christian gets the job done

St Mary's College has been successfully placing young people with special needs within the local business community as part of their Work Experience Programme.

The most recent success was that of Christian Oliver, who was placed with Motivation & Co, a company providing physical motivation and exercise classes to the elderly within local residential care homes.

Christian, a keen theatre performer, was the perfect candidate to work alongside the Motivation & Co staffing team in order to add an extra touch of enthusiasm, positivity and fun into the lives of all those who attend the classes.

Business owner Cathy Stafford supported Emma Meeres, the College Work Experience Coordinator, to set up the placement and offered work experience to Christian for three months. His placement ended as Christian had just completed his time at St Mary's and will now move on to a college nearer his home town.

Emma commented: "This placement was ideal for Christian in lots of ways; it allowed him to strengthen his communication skills, and gain vital volunteering work experience. Due to this opportunity, Christian has now achieved a Duke of Edinburgh Award.

"Without the support of businesses such as Motivation & Co, our students would not have the opportunity to gain the essential skills they must have for their future career paths."

Christian commented: "I loved working with Motivation & Co, I feel like I have learnt a lot from the experience and I would like to thank Cathy for setting it up and Jan for supporting me."
