On Thursday (October 21), Tesco, in Broadpiece, handed over the money to representatives from the local branch of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

The charity, which trains dogs to alert deaf people or those with hearing problems of potential danger signs like smoke alarms going off, which they would not hear otherwise, received the cash from Tesco store manager Helen Knight.

She said: “This is a life-changing charity. When I first heard about it I never knew how much they did for deaf people. So this donation will really help them a lot.”

Diana Marangos, of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, said: “It’s an amazing, wonderful donation which we are very, very grateful for. It’ll make a big difference in training another dog which would be a fabulous help to another recipient.”
