CHRISTMAS has been a busy time for a group of volunteers helping the elderly in Shoreham.

The Southlanders Community Café Christmas fair went ‘brilliantly’ and raised approximately £350.

Adults enjoyed the stalls at Milward Court, Wilmot Road, Shoreham, and children were kept busy writing letters and making Christmas cards for Santa, before posting them in the special postbox.

Southlanders chairman Ann Martin said: “The raffle was supported by prizes from Mansell Road Post Office and Tesco. The chairman of the council, Mike Mendoza, and Cllr Peter Metcalfe visited unexpectedly and spoke to everyone.”

Southlanders held a community carol service earlier in December, which was well attended and followed by tea and mince pies.

On Monday, December 16, the volunteers group held its annual Christmas party and the duo, Just The Two of Us, kept everyone up dancing and singing.

The café will be open for two hours on Christmas Day, from 10am to 12pm, and will then close until January 6.

Mr Mendoza said he had been impressed with the volunteers, who give up their free time to make life a little easier for the elderly residents in the area, offering company, refreshments and general help.

He said: “They even provide lunch for the elderly twice a week. They would love to do more but they are surviving on very limited resources, all of which they have to raise themselves as there is no help available to them.

“If you can give a few hours per week or able to donate some money to these great people, whose total aim is to make life a little easier for those in our community who are fragile and unable to help themselves, the number to call is 01273 884921.”
