Christmas comes to Midhurst

“We are very pleased with the new lights,” said town council chairman Mark Purves, “particularly in West Street and we had many very positive comments about them during the street party.”

During the evening there was entertainment from a line-up of talented local musicians including Gracie Spooner, Ed and Ollie Goodale, Martha Buchanan, Those Restless Nights , Midhurst Mysical Mayhem, a combined choir from Easebourne and Midhurst Primary Schools and Conifers as well as a performance by Shooting Stars, the Midhurst Primary after school choir which has just recorded three of their own pop songs.

Marco Frankland’s Ukelele Orchestra also entertained.

Lord and Lady Cowdray and their son Peregrine performed the new switch-on ceremony which lit up the tree in the Square and went on to admire the new lights around the town.

Many traders stayed open for late night shopping and food and drink was on offer from the town’s cafes and restaurants.

Children got the chance to meet Father Christmas in a stunning festive grotto organised by Martyn Chevis in his West Street salon.

“There was a great atmosphere i and the evening was a big success,” said Mark.

“Lots of people said there were more people around this year and that maybe because we had the switch-on ceremony. The success of the event is thanks to the partnership working of the town council and the town team and we look forward to building on the success for next year’s event.|”

On Saturday there were more festive surprises in store when Santa’s reindeer stopped off in Midhurst to meet shoppers.
