Christmas drivers passed the test

TWO of three people breath-tested by police in Endwell Road on Christmas Eve walked up to officers to request checks because they were intending to drive home having had a pint, but wanted to be sure they were safe to do so. None of the three roadside tests exceeded the limit.

Sergeant Tricia Reeve-Fowkes, of Bexhill Police, was one of four officers conducting checks as part of a countywide drink-drive campaign, and said more than 30 vehicles had been stopped and their drivers spoken to.

She added: “The idea of the stops was to promote awareness about drink-driving, and the fact that two people saw us and were concerned enough to ask us to check their limit before driving home was a positive result in itself.”

One driver stopped was reported for no insurance, no driving licence and being in possession of cannabis. Sgt Reeve-Fowkes said that Christmas Eve revellers in Bexhill stayed out until at least 3am, but said: “Everyone was in good spirits and enjoying themselves.”

One troublesome incident occurred in St Mark’s Church car park between 11pm and 12.30am when the owner of a green Ford Focus returned from attending midnight mass to find that two of the vehicle’s tyres had been slashed.

Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or who has other information about the vandalism is asked to contact PC Jason Kemp at Bexhill Police Station, telephone 0845 60 70 999.
