A Christmas Extravaganza in Newhaven helped boost trade for local businesses in the High Street on Saturday December 8.
The event also brought the community together and was a great success.
Carol singing, Santa’s grotto and seasonal music, children’s rides and a magician were all part of the entertainment.
There were also community stalls, a market and craft stalls.
It was organised by Newhaven Community Development Association (NCDA).
Sally Foote from NCDA said: “The day was a roaring success and many of the local traders reported record takings which is great news.
“It seems that a full day event is much more successful than the late night shopping ever was as it attracts all age groups, and we had people there from Peacehaven and Seaford as well as many locals.
“The High Street was packed with people from 9.30am onwards so I think we had between three and three and a half thousand people in total.”
This was the third all day Christmas shopping event that NCDA had held in partnership with Newhaven Chamber of Commerce.
Previously the Chamber ran a late night shopping event.
Sally added: “It is clear by the number of people attending that the all day event is more popular and it appeals to all age groups.
“Santa’s Grotto was extremely busy, we almost ran out of presents!
“The ‘elves’ had to replenish the stock very quickly!! We shall certainly be looking to hold a similar event again next year subject to funding.”
Chamber of Commerce president Annie Lorys said: “The weather was very kind - a perfect ‘Good King Wencelas’ crisp, cold day. There were certainly more people about this year - at times the High Street looked positively busy.”
