Churches Together in Good Friday procession

SOME 250 people took part in this year's Bexhill Churches Together 'Walk for Christ' procession through the town on Good Friday - a sizeable increase in numbers since the ecumenical event was launched several years ago.

One of the organisers, Ken Hutchinson, said: “We reckon there were around 50 more people in the procession this time, and it seems to get more popular with each passing year.

“More than 20 different churches in and around Bexhill were invited to take part, and we had people of all ages join us, including some folk in wheelchairs.”

The procession in recognition of Christ’s sacrifice was led by a cross-bearer and set off from Town Hall Square, pausing in Devonshire Square for the singing of an Easter hymn, before reaching the seafront where a further act of worship took place.

Banners were carried and cards were distributed en route, each bearing the words of the featured hymns and an explanation of what Good Friday means in the Christian faith.

Following the hour-long procession, a united service was held at Sackville Road Methodist Church, where the current chairman of Bexhill Churches Together, the Reverend Peter Timms, is minister.
