Lewes Cinema announced it will leave its current venue after 15 years operating in the town.

The cinema has been based at Lewes Little Theatre in Lancaster Street but will quit the town for good.

Lewes Theatre Club said the Licence Agreement under which Lewes Cinema operated to show films at Lewes Little Theatre would be terminated in December.

The cinema is leaving because the demands of running a commercial cinema proved incompatible with the production of a regular programme of plays.

A notice on the cinema’s Facebook page read: “We arrived at this conclusion after very long and careful consideration.

“The cinema is well-liked and has produced some spectacular successes and we have loved operating it, but unfortunately we are unable to run the type of cinema programme we would like to, due to the irregular pattern of dates made available by the theatre.

“We would like to make it very clear that we have chosen to leave the venue after amicable discussion with the theatre’s management committee.

“And so sadly, for the time being, we are leaving Lewes.

“Over the years we have enjoyed amazing support from all of our customers and all of the local shops and businesses who displayed publicity for us, all of whom we thank from the bottom of our hearts.

“We must also pay a huge tribute to the team of staff and volunteers who have made it all possible.

“We are proud of what we have achieved with the cinema but it is now time for us to move on. Thank you to everyone who has supported us.”
