City centre roads closed as firefighters seal off 'dangerous structure'

Emergency services have closed two main roads in Brighton, as an advertising screen on North Road was battered by strong winds this afternoon (February 28).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called at 2.30pm today (February 28) to a 'dangerous structure' on North Road, Brighton.

Police and firefighters could be seen closing off Queens Road and North Road at 3pm, as a section of the advertising screen appeared to have broken off.

A fire service spokesperson said: "At 2.30pm, firefighters from Brighton were called to Queens Road, Brighton following reports of an unsafe advertising board.

"Crews are still on scene and are making steady progress. North Road and Queens Road are currently closed to the public. Please use alternative routes."

Sussex Police said: "Police were called by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at 2.40pm on Wednesday with concerns for the structural safety of a billboard in Queens Road, Brighton. Queens Road and North Road, Brighton, have both been closed.

"No injuries have been reported."

This comes as The Met Office warned of 'a strengthening easterly wind' in Brighton today, with further weather warnings for wind and snow in the coming days.
