Class Show

YAPTON Village Hall served as the venue for the Cottage Gardeners' Society autumn show on Saturday, attracting excellent floral displays from growers from Bognor Regis and Arundel to Rustington.

The number of entries in the show was 337, which was slightly above last year's total, with 44 exhibitors involved, including two newcomers. Every class had at least one entry, a most unusual occurrence.

With the recent superb weather, dahlias and chrysanthemums were the principal cut flowers in the show and there was a range of pot plants. Vegetables and fruit completed the horticultural section of the schedule.

The exhibition of flower arrangements continued its expansion and the cookery section was extremely competitive and wines and beers made an interesting section, with a good entry also for photographic prints.

A total of five children entered the eight classes devised for younger exhibitors.

The efforts of the entrants were rewarded with an excellent attendance of 140 visitors to enjoy the show and the plant stall, honey products, raffle, tombola and refreshments.

The day closed with the presentation of trophies by the society's vice-president Ivor Smith.

Malcolm Paradine, notably successful in the showing of vegetables, took the Edith Godfrey Trophy for the most points in the show.

Alan Humphrey was judged to have the best vegetable exhibit (two cauliflowers) for the Deegan Shield and provided the best vases of dahlias for the National Dahlia Society's silver and bronze certificates.

Ken Rippengale was presented with a trophy for his support of the horticultural classes throughout the year and society chairman, Roy Phillips, held the Joan Waddington Memorial Vase for fuchsias.

Joan Jackson retained the WR Trophy for season-long staging of floral art, but only by a whisker, with show secretary David Donovan keeping the Neil Baxter Memorial Trophy for cookery and handi-crafts.
