Clear waters for storm-battered Littlehampton sailors

SAILORS young and old made a concerted effort to repair a vital beach facility in Littlehampton which had been left in tatters by fierce storms earlier this year.

Members of the Arun Youth Aqua Centre, in Hendon Avenue, spent Saturday fixing the group’s beach ramp that had been destroyed by tidal surges.

The team hired a digger – the cost of which was covered by a parent whose son had started sailing at the centre – to clear away the shingle which had washed up the beach.

The group then laid the new ramp leading towards the beach – just in time for the start of the sailing season, in May.

Roger Elliman, chairman of the AYAC’s management committee, said: “Without the huge support of the parents and volunteer instructors the centre would not be able to operate. This working party epitomises the massive commitment and support the centre has for its operation in ensuring youngsters have cheap and affordable access to sailing and canoeing in the local area.”
