A meeting arranged to give campaigners the chance to discuss climate change issues with Maria Caulfield MP has been cancelled amid fears it would get out of control.
The member of parliament for Lewes organised the meeting following a lobby of Parliament in June where, although she met a number of constituents, she was unable to meet with a particular group of campaigners.
The meeting was due to take place with these eight activists at Seaford Library, but after seeing evidence online that larger numbers of people would attend, she reluctantly cancelled the session.
Maria said: “I am always happy to meet people, and I met people on the day in London. I arranged to meet with others, who I couldn’t see on the day, within the constituency on Friday.
“However, it is not right, or fair, on staff or customers (particularly elderly and vulnerable) at Seaford Library, for these arrangements to be changed and for them to possibly have their day disrupted by large numbers of protestors, potentially making them feel anxious or threatened.
“I remain happy to meet with people on this issue or to raise the issues in writing directly with Ministers.”
