Climping school determined to build on ‘good’ report

Inspectors from the education watchdog this week praised St Mary’s CE Primary School, in Brookpit Lane, Climping, for remaining a good school.

However, despite being delighted by the result, St Mary’s head teacher Janet Llewelyn stressed she was keen to continue work to drive up standards even further, striving for the top ‘outstanding’ grade, adding that work was already underway to improve pupils’ literacy skills.

“We’re working on some really exciting projects at the moment,” she said. “We’ve got a nice scheme to help with reading practise that we’re running with the University of Chichester.”

The initiative will see parents taking part in workshops with university students to help them encourage their children to read at home more.

Mrs Llewelyn added: “We’re really focusing on making reading fun and exciting for the children because we understand it can feel like a bit of a chore sometimes.”

In the report, released on Thursday (November 13), inspectors praised the efforts by the head and senior staff for showing ‘strong leadership’ and having a ‘clear vision’ for improvements at the school

The ‘good quality’ of teaching was also highlighted with marked improvement in mathematics being noted.
