Clock tower reaches 100th anniversary

PLANS are afoot to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the magnificent clock tower on West Parade.

Town Forum member Paul Lendon has discovered that the monument will reach its century next year and doesn't want the landmark birthday to go unrecognised.

He appealed to the forum on Tuesday for ideas on how best to mark the occasion. Paul suggested: "I think we should at least have a plaque made up and unveiled because there's nothing to that effect at the moment.

"Perhaps we could have some sort of design competition involving the local youth because it's their heritage as much as ours."

Paul remembers the days when the fascinating Guinness clock used to visit the town every summer and wants to know if it is still in use.
