Clowning around at Nyewood school

A mission to spread smiles across the miles took an American clown to a Bognor Regis school.

Toto visited Nyewood CoE Infant School to show some of its younger pupils how he put on his motley.

He entertained the children on one of the first of 13 visits by clowns to schools and nurseries around the town in the build-up to the clowns' weekend.

Toto is likely to be joined by about 90 other clowns as the laughter and humour really gets under way in Bognor.

Today (Thursday, March 5) sees the clowns holding a Clowns International workshop in Butlins before they meet and greet the expected 4,500 guests who will be packing the holiday resort from tomorrow.

Saturday will see a selection of the clowns entertaining shoppers of all ages along the London Road precinct.

All the clowns will take part in the grand parade from 2pm on Sunday,March 8, led by the Mardi Gras Joymakers Jazz Band. The parade, organised by Bognor Regis Town Council, is likely to last for about two hours.

Council events officer Sue Holmes said: "The music of the Dixeyland-style band should get everybody's toes tapping, while the antics of the funny men (and women) should bring a smile or laughter to the faces of those along the route."

Thousands of spectators are expected to line the route from the Butlins day entrance in Gloucester Road, along the seafront to Lennox Street and into the High Street.

The procession will then go along Bedford Street before heading south along the London Road precinct back to the High Street and Clarence Road to return to Butlins.

n Motorists have been warned several roads will be closed for the parade. These will include: The Esplanade from Butlins day visitor entrance to Lennox Street; Lennox Street; the High Street between Queensway to Clarence Road; Bedford Street, Clarence Road, Sudley Road.

Spectators wishing to park in the Regis Centre car park should be there before 1.30pm when the road closure will take effect.
