Clymping and Angmering clubs remember old friend

A FAMILY fun day has raised more than £2,000 in memory of a trainee teacher who died just three days before Christmas, in 2006.

The event, including a charity football match, was held in memory of Gavin Crossley, who died in a road traffic incident.

A trainee teacher, Gavin was a popular figure in the local community, having played football for both Clymping and Angmering.

For the past five years, the two clubs have remembered their former team-mate by holding a charity football match to raise money for Headway, in West Sussex, which supports those affected by brain injury.

This year, the clubs once again came together but organisers said the event was bigger-and-better than ever with events for all the family.

“The football match is always special,” said organiser Louise Gallagher.

“This year, though, we wanted to make the day about the entire family. The weather didn’t put anyone off, everyone made an effort to attend and join in all the fun.”

Attractions included cake stands, a tombola, golf games and penalty shoot-outs.

There was also a race night, which raised more than £500, with prizes ranging from tickets to see the England football team at Wembley to theatre tickets.

Gavin’s father, Chris, of Osprey Close, Wick, said: “We’re incredibly touched by all the effort that has gone into organising this year’s event.

“Gavin clearly meant an awful lot to many people. It certainly was a wonderful way to remember him.”

Angmering Football Club won the match 8-6.
