Co-op plans move to Pebsham

The Co-operative group announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the long-vacant Premier convenience store at Pebsham for "an undisclosed sum."

The moved had been rumoured locally for some time. Meanwhile, the Seabourne Road store had remained shuttered.

The group said the move will provide the local community with an enhanced service and create up to 15 new jobs.

Group regional chief officer Mark Hudson said: "As the country's leading community retailer we can offer local shoppers a more comprehensive range of products, competitive prices and excellent promotions."

The Co-operative Group will now invest 275,000 in carrying out an extensive refit at the store, which will re-open towards the end of August.

Mr Hudson said: "It will be among the first of The Co-operative Group's 3,300 outlets in the UK to feature the consumer-owned business' new identity, The co-operative, which aims to highlight improved service standards as well as its commitment to supporting local communities and ethical trading policies.

"This is a significant investment in Bexhill for The Co-operative Group and we look forward to serving the local community with the best in modern convenience shopping and to playing our part in community life in the best traditions of the Co-op."
