Codes could help crack crime in Arun

A FRESH approach to tackling mobile phone crime is about to be launched in Arun district.

A new poster campaign, launched by the Safer Arun Partnership, will use the latest QR code technology, in the wake of a spate of mobile phone thefts.

When the QR codes are scanned by a bar code reader on a smart phone, they will take that user to a dedicated page at the partnership’s website providing the latest information and crime prevention advice.

It is hoped that young people will take heed of the advice.

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council’s cabinet member for community safety and chairman of the Safer Arun Partnership, said: “We want to try to raise the awareness among young people to keep their mobiles safe at all times.

“We think that the age range of people whose phones are being stolen will be receptive to the QR technology. We’re always looking for new and effective ways to reach our audiences. Incorporation of the QR code into the mix brings a new angle, and one that we’ll be using again in future campaigns.”

The partnership advises people to keep their mobile phone with them at all times and not put it down anywhere or leave it unattended in bags or coats. Any suspicious activity should be reported to the police.

Posters will be put up in bars and clubs across the district in the coming weeks, as well as in schools and youth clubs.
