The coins, worth about 1,000, were last seen by their owner, Frank Hauser, in the loft of his house in Rowe Avenue, three months ago.

He said: 'Personal reasons meant that I had to move out of that property several weeks ago. I went back there on March 31 to collect my belongings only to find most of my coin collection missing.'

The collection includes seven complete sets of threepenny pieces, sixpences, shillings and half- crowns, with some in distinctive four-leaf folders, an American silver dollar coin, a Kennedy half-dollar coin, 20 Churchill crowns and commemorative Charles and Diana wedding coins.

Mr Hauser, now living near Haywards Heath, said the coins had sentimental value. 'These mean a great deal to me and are in my will to be handed down to my daughter.'
