Colbran: ‘We should have already won the game’

HORSHAM manager Simon Colbran reckoned his side missed out on another three points through their own mistakes when they let slip a 1-0 lead at half-time before eventually losing 2-1 to 10-man Canvey Island.

Ryan Marriott scored his first goal for the club to give Hornets a promising 10th minute lead when he latched on to a through ball by Ciro Donadio, turned his marker and netted with an impressive finish.

Canvey had a player sent-off just three minutes later when Matt Game appeared to attack Adam Hutchings after a challenge.

Horsham looked comfortable going into the break but could not increase their lead despite chances from Louie Hollingsworth and Wayne Clarke going close.

Canvey were chasing the play-off places and got back into the game with a 70th minute equaliser which went in off the post by John Curran after a free-kick was only half-cleared.

Then five minutes later Canvey scored what proved to be the winner when substitute Jason Hallett stole in to receive a cross from the left unmarked and put away from short-range.

Colbran said: “That is the fourth time we have lost 2-1 since I’ve been here and each time we could have easily won those games but for a silly five minute period.

“You can’t afford to lose concentration or you will be punished. How many times do I need to say this? I hope people will have learnt over the summer and improve and take the experience from that.

“I don’t want to put it all on the defence all the time, even though it’s concentration at the back. We have had chances where we can finish as well. We had about five which came across the penalty area, one which was missed and others where we had a go instead of squaring.

“We should have had the game finished in the first place. If you don’t you always put your defence under pressure and that showed in that five-minute period.”
