The recent cold spell has seen sales of wild bird food and feeders soar at one outlet in Newhaven.
Karl Pidgley, pet and aquatics manager at Paradise Park, said: “Due to the mild winters of 2013-14 wild bird sales slowed but as soon we get a decent frost and a scattering of snow people tend to think about the wildlife in their back gardens and sales reflect this.”
Many customers of the Avis Road store took part in the RSPB’s ‘Big Garden Bird watch’ on January 24 and 25, counting and recording how many and of which species of bird were seen in their gardens over an hour. More than six million birds were counted this year from results submitted so far.
Paradise Park is backing another British wildlife initiative by supporting the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) National Nest Week, which runs until February 21.
