College honours the founder of secondary education in Midhurst

Midhurst Rother College honoured the memory of the founder of secondary education in the town at its annual Gilbert Hannam Day.

It began for years 11 and 13 with blessings in Midhurst parish church led by the Rev David Willis, with guest, The Rev Trish Bancroft giving the sermon. Head boy and girl, George Caws and Erin Collins, presented The Rev Bancroft with the traditional gift of a pair of leather gloves.

The congregation enjoyed a rendition of ‘For Good from Wicked’ performed by Year 11 and 13 students, Sophie Brownbill and Anja Blackwell, accompanied by Ted Murray.

The celebrations continued with the Gilbert Hannam Prize Giving Evening. Guest speaker, well known Midhurst figure, Colin Hughes, gave a heartfelt and humorous speech, recounting his memories as a teacher at the former Midhurst Grammar School and, more recently, working with students through the Midhurst Youth Wing on the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Colin said that part of his directive on joining the grammar school in 1968 was to support the building of a new youth wing, a project he finally saw completed in 2014 when new facilities opened in Lamberts Lane after a delay of 46 years!

The Gilbert Hannam Education Foundation awarded their Essay Prize, the Tom Smith Art Prize and the Hyman and Lucas Travel Bursaries.

Principal Stuart Edwards,taking part in his first Gilbert Hannam Day, presented his Principal’s Awards to Ted Murray, Anja Blackwell and Jasmin Cain for outstanding services to the college.
