College students hold innovativeevents for International Earth Day

To celebrate Earth Day, which takes place on April 22, the students planned and organised a day of events to encourage their peers and wider community to be proactive when it comes to taking care of the planet.

The event, which took place all day in the atrium at Station Plaza, featured an art exhibition, a plant sale, a craft workshop, and a selection of films, music and animations – as well as an ‘Earth collage’ centre piece.

Roz Katz, Lecturer in Supported Education at Sussex Coast College Hastings said: “Students have been studying a Personal Well-Being course, and as caring for the planet is a fundamental part of everyone’s well-being, planning an event around this theme felt very relevant.”

“The students found the whole process very rewarding and learnt lots of valuable skills. Some also had the opportunity to participate in several enrichment activities such as weaving, art, ceramics, horticulture and a lesson about ‘mindfulness’. Others were able to explore the impact of global warming – which they presented during the event.”

Charlie Stonham, Sussex Coast College Hastings Student said: “Earth Day is an exciting opportunity to make people aware of how important it is to take care of our planet.

We helped to create our Earth Day event in the hope it will inspire others to take personal responsibility in saving our planet by making a pledge.”

Supported Education provides a positive learning environment for those who have learning difficulties, disabilities or who may benefit from having the reassurance of belonging to a supportive programme to aid progression in or out of further education.

Supportive Education focuses on skills in independent living, employability, personal and social development, as well as vocational interests and skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT.
