This striking picture beautifully represents aspects of chemistry that inspire interest.

The photo was submitted by Kateryna Tkachenko, who is currently studying A level Chemistry at Bexhill College.

Kateryna has already been offered a place at Cambridge University, where she will read for a degree in Natural Sciences.

A college spokesman said: "We look forward to running this competition again in 2008, and giving students a creative opportunity to enjoy the aesthetic qualities of this fascinating key science subject.
