Colourful moths on show in Newick

Visitors to Newick Common were given the chance to get close to colourful Hawk moths as part of national nature evening.

The event was held last Friday (June 10) as part of Moth Night, an annual celebration of moth recording throughout Britain organised by Atropos and Butterfly Conservation.

The group says they hope the national events will provide a ‘snapshot’ on numbers of moth species and populations.

Lewes District Council’s community ranger Dan Fagan said: “Moths are a hugely important part of the natural world. They help pollinate lots of plants and provide a huge food source to other animals such as bats. The general thinking is that moths are brown and boring, but events like these let people see how exciting and beautiful these creatures truly are”.

The event was support by the council’s community Rangers and local moth expert Steve Teale. More than 400 moths and 88 species were recorded in Newick.

There are thought to be more than 2,500 species of moth in the UK.
