It could be someone who has overcome illness, risked everything to help others or stood up for what they believe in.

For Rich Sherwell, the obvious nominee for our Outstanding Bravery Award was Bethany Chiddle.

Bethany has been featured in the Observer several times has her family tried to raise money for her to travel to America for an operation allowing her to walk unaided.

Thanks to the generosity of fundraisers, including Rich, Bethany and her mum, Kerry, travelled to America earlier this year for the operation.

“Beth at the age of four travelled to the USA with her mum to undergo an SDR operation to help her walk unaided,” said Rich.

“They were away from family for six weeks.

“Suffering from quadriplegic cerebral palsy, Beth has been truly inspirational in her bravery through both the operation and the ongoing intensive physiotherapy.”

Do you know someone whose bravery deserves recognition?

Hero to Animals

This year, we are once again running our Hero to Animals category.

This can be an individual, charity or group working to protect the welfare of animals, offer them a safe home or conserve habitats.

There are so many great volunteers in our area working in this area which is why we are surprised to announce there is still plenty of space in our Hero to Animals category.

If you know someone that fits in this category don’t miss your chance to nominate – the deadline for nominations is now just weeks away.

“Our readers are known for being great animal lovers,” said group editor Colin Channon.

“Stories about the welfare of our four-legged, or winged, friends are often the most popular, both online and in the paper.

“So, we would love to recognise those who look out for them at our annual awards.”
