Community sentence for Uckfield man guilty of council tax fraud

An Uckfield man who tried to defraud Wealden District Council of council tax benefit has been sentenced to 200 hours of community work and ordered to pay costs.

Mr Taibur Rahman, (40) of Nevill Road, had originally applied for council tax benefit giving his own and his wife  income and was told that he did not qualify.

A year later he applied, but this time only gave his own income as a self employed person and was told he would qualify. From 2007- 2012 he continued to claim benefit only declaring his own income.

This resulted in a benefit overpayment of £3,381.72. The offence came to light after routine checks by the Department of Work and Pensions and the council.

Mr Rahman pleaded guilty at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court to two offences of dishonestly making a false representation with a view to obtain benefit.
