Community service for 60-year-old Alfriston benefits cheat

An elderly man has been ordered to carry out community work after falsely claiming more than £4,000 in benefits.

The 60-year-old benefits cheat has been ordered to complete 100 hours of free work within the next year.

The man from the sleepy village of Alfriston pleaded guilty to making a false statement when making an application for Council Tax Benefit, failing to declare a rental property in Seaford and not declaring bank accounts from which he drew annuity.

He received £4,392.21 in Council Tax Benefit over a period. of more than two years.

Wealden district Coun Nick Collinson, cabinet member with responsibility for Benefits, said: “Council Tax Support does not exist to support households that are already well supported by their property or investments.

“Making a false statement when applying for benefits is a serious offence, and we will prosecute those who abuse the system.”
