COMMUNITY STARS: Littlehampton man is a 'True Inspiration'

Aged 27, Mark Biggs was thrown into running the well-known Biggs Bakery in Wick, Littlehampton.

He has been nominated in the True Inspiration category in the Herald and Gazette series' Community Stars Awards.

Inspiration

Barabara Everard, 47, who has worked at the Wick Street bakery since last November, nominated Mark.

She said: "Mark has inspired me greatly by taking over the running of the family business when his mother Sally died suddenly last year.

"He has taken on the challenge brilliantly and no task is too big or small for him.

"It must have been difficult to suddenly have so much to cope with and to still be grieving for his mum."

Children's Trust

Barbara said Mark works tirelessly to provide an excellent community service and in his spare time also raises funds for the The Children's Trust.

Biggs Bakery, which opened in 1935, has been run by four generations of Mark's family.

Mark said: "I am quite surprised to be nominated but it is nice to be recognised. It makes me feel good.

Mother's work

"I always wanted to learn everything about the business, but before mum died I worked in the bakery with my dad baking and placing orders so never got to learn anything more.

"Mum did the books and managed the shop and generally dealt with customers.

"She was brilliant at it, so when she died I knew I would have to step up and teach myself how to do the books and act as the face of the bakery. I hope she would be proud."
