Several Southern services from London towards Bognor Regis were also disrupted on Monday evening, with multiple services cancelled.

The choas preceded a protest at Brighton station from around 100 angry commuters on Tuesday, calling for Southern to relinquish its franchise.

Commuter Andy Mulligan was unable to return home from Horsham due to rail service cancellations and eventually gave up and stayed overnight in a hotel.

“It’s become such a nightmare not knowing if trains are going to run,” he said. “It’s like a circus.”
