Concern over young cyclists

Children as young as five are putting themselves at risk by riding their bikes dangerously around a Netherfield estate, a councillor has said.

Cllr John Boryer told a meeting of Battle Town Council on Tuesday that the children were not taking enough care whilst riding around Darvel Down.

Cllr Boryer, town councillor for Netherfield, said: "Because of the nature of the roads up there - they are closed and there's no particular danger from fast through traffic - they seem to think they can ride across roads and down footpaths without any consideration."

Cllr Sylvie Pry added: "They are out at dusk as well without lights."

Police Community Support Officer Sam Kemp said the children are given talks on road safety at the village primary school.

She added that police would speak to the parents of any child seen riding dangerously.
