Conservative wins Angmering by-election

TORY candidate Andy Cooper successfully defended his party’s Arun District Council seat in the Angmering and Poling by-election yesterday (Thursday).

Mr Cooper, who is also chairman of Rustington Parish Council, topped the poll with 878 votes, well ahead of Labour’s Carly Godwin, with 268 votes, who pushed Liberal Democrat Jamie Bennett into third place, with 228 votes.

It was a low turnout, with just 24.4 per cent of electors casting their vote.

The by-election was called following the death in January of Conservative councillor Julie Hazlehurst.
