KEEN CLLRS: There was a planning meeting for members of Hamsey Parish Council held on Bank Holiday Monday, December 28, in the village hall, Cooksbridge. This was to consider the following applications: LW/15/0897 Knights Court, south Road, South Common, South Chailey. Removal of variation conditions of 12 and 13 relating to LW/01/1874 for the extension of operating hours to 24 hours a day. SDNP/15/05406/HOUS and SDNP/15/05407/Lis Offham House, the Street, Offham. Replacement garden room. SDNP/15/06058/FUL Land adjoining the Old Wheelwrights Shop, The Street, Offham. Section 73A Retrospective planning application showing amended height of bungalow approved under SDNP/14/04918/FUL. LW/15/0874 and LW/15/0875 Cooksbridge House North, Cooksbridge Road, Cooksbridge. Demolition of existing single storey kitchen and conservatory extension and construction of new single storey hall, utility room and kitchen dining room.

HAMSEY PARISH COUNCIL: The council are due to meet on Thursday at 7.15pm in the village hall, Beechwood Lane. Up to 15 minutes only are allowed at the start of the meeting for members of the public to express a view or ask a question on relevant matters on the council agenda. It would be helpful to inform the parish clerk of any questions in advance on 01273 890621. Public are welcome to stay and observe the rest of the meeting.

STRANGE SKIES: Living here under the Downs I get to see some wonderful sunrises and sunsets along with the most beautiful rainbows, but the week after Christmas I saw an extraordinary sight early one morning. The rain was lashing against the windows and it was blowing a gale when I decided to look out and saw a very bright moon peeping through the trees on the scarp with the brightest star I have ever seen just to the left of it. Much to my son’s amusement I told him that it was probably Major Tim hurtling around in space.

CRAZY WEATHER: The daffodils have been in bloom in my garden since the first week of December and the bluebells are already pushing through. Sadly, because of the mild weather, all the beautiful snowdrops have not appeared yet, but if the weather predictions are right and we are in for a very cold spell, shortly they should start showing their pretty blooms. It seems that all the daffodils will be over by Easter when they are much needed for decorating churches etc.

BIRDS: There are masses of birds coming to the feeders on the patio and I think we should be prepared for some early breeding due to the mild weather. Last week I saw a large number of cormorants flying over the downs which looked like a large migration. A friend very kindly gave me a lovely bird feeder which holds Nyger Seed and should attract Siskins and other species of tits.
