'COOLEST RESORT' A 'SLEEPING GIANT JUST WAKING UP'.

"LITTLEHAMPTON is a sleeping giant and we are just waking up," said Littlehampton councillor Mark Butler. He was commenting on the recent poll which saw the town voted the coolest seaside resort in the country by fashion bible, Vogue.

THE new East Beach caf in Littlehampton will be owned and run by Jane Wood, along with her daughter, Sophie Murray, who both live close to the site of the new building on the sea front.

Jane explained a little of how the project came about.

"There were plans to build a 96-seater burger restaurant on the site," she said, "but the building was ugly and we thought it would spoil the area."

So Jane, who currently runs the Putting Green caf in Norfolk Gardens, set about acquiring the site herself and now expects the new building to open in February.

She met artist and designer Thomas Heatherwick at an event at Goodwood.

"I already knew some of his work and met Thomas at a function during 'Sculpture at Goodwood'," said Jane.

"I told him about the caf '“ and he asked, if he could design the building.

"He knows Littlehampton and had used Littlehampton Welding to build his famous Rolling Bridge, which is set around the Grand Union canal."
